Title: Creating GIS Web Services
Authors: Morley, Jeremy
Subject: Open Software;Open Standards;Web Services
Material Type: Tutorial
Issue Date: 25-Jul-2011
Abstract: This practical follows the lecture about FOSS GIS and the OSGeo stack. Here, you will try the following: • Add new workspaces, stores and layers to Geoserver based on shapefiles • Explore how these storage features relate to the layers served by Geoserver through OCG web services. • Alter the styling of layers in Geoserver; create & access multiple styles for layers defined in Geoserver • Import externally defined “Styled Layer Descriptor” (SLD) documents into Geoserver to define layer styles. • Adapt SLDs by hand, and create them in QGIS. • Export a map from QGIS to be used to serve data from Mapserver The aim is that by the end you should feel comfortable with the basics of setting up Geoserver to create OGC GIS web services and have some experience with setting up Mapserver by exporting a mapfile from QGIS. The instructions are based around the use of the OSGeo Live Virtual Machine, version 4.5, as the operating environment.
